How to pick a financial adviser

It can be hard to know what to look for when choosing a financial adviser. Especially if you have not met with one before. Below are some points you could use to get a clearer idea of what qualities a good financial adviser should have.

Decide what type of advice you want

Before you look for a financial adviser you should decide what service you are looking for. Do you need one off financial advice for a specific issue such as investing a lump sum from an inheritance? Or do you want someone to do all of the work for you and manage your assets over the long term?

At Four Wealth Management, our financial advisers provide holistic advice and look at your whole financial situation. You will get an annual review meeting to discuss any changes in your circumstances that may affect your portfolio. Your adviser will also let you know of any tax or legislation changes that will affect your investments.

Did they take the time to understand your situation?

Financial advice should be tailored to your individual needs and circumstances. Advice that is suitable for you will not be suitable for everyone.

A good financial adviser will ask a lot of questions about you and your family at the initial meeting and take the time to learn about your current financial situation and what you are hoping to achieve. They should also ask about your attitude to risk and how long you are expecting to stay invested for.

If your first meeting with a financial adviser ends with them making a recommendation straight away when you do not feel they have asked enough questions to understand your situation, you should find a different adviser.
