Everything you need to know about Stocks & Shares ISAs

With the end of the Tax Year just around the corner, you may want to consider opening an ISA to utilise your annual tax-efficient allowance of £20,000 before 5th April.

What is a Stocks & Shares ISA?

A Stocks & Shares ISA is a tax-efficient way of saving for your future. Any investments in an ISA are free from UK income and capital gains tax.

How much can I contribute to a Stocks & Shares ISA?

There is an annual allowance that you can put into your Stocks & Shares ISA. The current allowance is £20,000.

You can split this allowance between a Stocks & Shares ISA, a Cash ISA and a Lifetime ISA (if opened under 40).

Why invest in an ISA?

A Stocks & Shares ISA is a tax-efficient way to save for your future and you pay no tax on UK income or capital gains from your investments. Assets in an ISA can be accessed whenever you need to, subject to any charges or penalty which may apply. This offers you flexibility and peace of mind. You do not need to declare your ISAs on your annual tax return.

Can I have more than one ISA?

You can only open one Stocks & Shares ISA per tax year. You can have multiple ISAs with different providers and you can bring all of your ISAs together for simplicity at a later date if you wish.

To find out more about opening a Stocks & Shares ISA or to discuss any existing ISAs you hold elsewhere, please contact us to book a no-obligation meeting with a financial adviser at your home address or at one of our offices in Bristol, Cirencester or London.

The value of an ISA with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested. An investment in a Stocks & Shares ISA will not provide the same security of capital associated with a Cash ISA.

The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation.
